Hoarseness

. Posted in SYMPTOMS OF DISEASE

If enough mucus inflames the voice box, this area of the throat will swell, causing hoarseness and, in extreme cases, laryngitis. Worse, when the voice box becomes inflamed, polyps of the vocal cords can form. If you suffer from GERD and/or LPRD, the vocal cords can become irritated by acids from the stomach, which can itself cause hoarseness. GERD and LPRD can also cause swelling of the vocal cords and to the area behind the vocal cords, called the postglottic space. When your sinuses and GERD/LPRD are acting up, your vocal cords are getting hit from above (by the inflammatory postnasal drip) and from below (by the inflammatory acids coming up from the stomach).
