Naturopathic Remedies

Naturopaths practice many of the techniques used by other practitioners and believe in healing by restoring strength to the individual rather than by curing specific diseases. They have a strong reverence for the healing power of nature. The goal for all practitioners of natural healing is to stimulate the body to heal itself. Rather than trying to attack specific diseases, natural healers focus on cleansing the body. Check with your local naturopathic society to find one near you.

Naturopaths often recommend the use of a neti pot. This ancient treatment, which I described in category 4, provides gentle nasal irrigation. Naturopaths recommend adding a drop of tea tree oil into the saline solution, which they feel provides symptomatic relief while also inhibiting bacterial growth.

Hot baths and/or steam heat with a few drops of eucalyptus, peppermint, and/or tea tree oil are also a gentle way to initiate treatment. Naturopaths use lots of natural botanical extracts and vitamin/mineral supplements for various CAID symptoms and conditions, including:

■ A multivitamin with B complex is suggested.

■ Vitamin C and echinacea have been shown to boost the immune system and help fight off infection before it occurs. Conversely, low vitamin C intake is associated with a higher asthma risk in children. Vitamin C is an antioxidant.

■ Zinc gluconate prevents viruses from implanting in the nasopharyngeal region.

■ Gingerroot is used to make a powerful tea that provides symptomatic relief of nasal congestion and sore throat and is also rich in vitamin C. The steam from the ginger tea acts as an excellent cough suppressant.

■ Ganmaoling is a popular Chinese herbal remedy that contains a minute amount of ephedra, which can raise your blood pressure and stress your circulatory system. This herb should be taken only with a doctor’s supervision. It is more commonly used for acute sinusitis. It is never safe to use pure ephedra for CAID symptoms.

■ Licorice root can help reduce bronchial inflammation and has expectorant effects.
